The Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards continues its commitment to honor the cream of the crop in agriculture journalism – writers and storytellers who are dedicated to the development of Philippine agriculture. With bigger and more exciting prizes, the 3rd Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards is now open to all works published or broadcast from June 15, 2008 to May 15, 2009.

The contest is open to all professional Filipino journalists residing in the Philippines, 18 years old and above and with a passion for journalistic excellence. All entries, either news or features, must focus on topics related to Agriculture in the Philippines.

Entries should be in English or Filipino. Works in other Philippine regional dialects will also be accepted, provided that the entry is accompanied by a translation in English.

2009 Bright Leaf Awards Winners Named

The winners of this year’s Bright Leaf Agriculture Journalism Awards (Bright Leaf Awards) have been named. From a field of hundreds, ten outstanding works were selected by the Board of Judges as the best pieces of agriculture journalism produced in the country over the past year.

This year’s winners are Melpha Abello’s “A housing material made from chicken feathers” (Agriculture Story of the Year); and Zac Sarian’s “Something new to Virginia tobacco” (Tobacco Story of the Year); Edgardo Espiritu’s “Spice Scarecrow” (Agriculture Photo of the Year); Andy Zapata’s “Among the Best” (Tobacco Photo of the Year); Neil Jerome Morales’ “Mango exports reel from pesticide curbs” (Best Agriculture News Story—National); Francis Martin’s “Most outstanding farmer practices indigenous farming” (Best Agriculture Feature Story—Regional); Miko Jasmine Mojica’s “When fish catch a cold, the rest of the world sneezes” (Best Agriculture Feature Story—National); Gloria Tuazon’s “The scent that heals” (Best Agriculture Feature Story—Regional); Inez Magbual’s “Corn (Crafts from corn husks)” (Best Agriculture TV Program/Segment); and Salvador Cruzana Jr.’s “Carera’s Farm: Big Time at 200” (Best Agriculture Radio Program/Segment).

Each entry was put through a rigorous judging process, and came under the review of some highly-esteemed figures in Philippine agricultural research and journalism.

This year’s Panel of Judges in the final round included Sec. Arthur Yap of the Department of Agriculture (DA); Gov. Grace Padaca of Isabela; Eduviges Huang, President of the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation; Jerry Carual, Director of Press Photographers of the Philippines; Prof. Candida Adalla, professor and former dean of the University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Agriculture; Juan Dayang, President of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc.; and Carlitos Encarnacion, Chairman, National Tobacco Administration.
